AINU Performs Successful Kidney Transplant for 25-Year-Old with Uncle as Donor

The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) successfully performed a kidney transplant on a 25-year-old patient, with the organ donated by his paternal uncle. The case highlights the lifesaving impact of living related donations and reinforces AINU’s expertise in advanced nephrology and urology care. Due to genetic compatibility among family members, such transplants often deliver high success rates.

Uncle Steps Forward When Parents Are Medically Unfit

The young man, originally from the Konaseema region and now a software engineer in Hyderabad, had been battling Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Nearly two years ago, he began experiencing severe headaches and frequent vomiting. Blood tests revealed dangerously high serum creatinine levels, prompting further evaluation and confirmation of CKD.

Although he required an urgent kidney transplant, both parents were medically unfit to donate. His mother had previously suffered a stroke and had hypertension, while his father had undergone bypass surgery and was managing high blood pressure. At this critical moment, his paternal uncle—deeply attached to him since childhood—immediately volunteered to donate a kidney. With the family’s full support, AINU proceeded with the transplant, giving the young man a renewed chance at life.

Doctors Explain the Medical Challenge and the Path to Transplant

Dr. Srikanth Gundlapalli, Senior Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician at AINU, who treated the patient and performed the transplant, shared key insights. “Severe kidney disease at such a young age—especially in someone with no harmful habits—is uncommon,” he explained. “In some cases, autoimmune disorders can trigger early-onset CKD. Despite long-term treatment, a transplant became the only solution.”

He added, “When both parents were ruled out as donors, his paternal uncle stepped forward. After completing all medical evaluations and adhering to government regulations, we proceeded with the surgery. The donor underwent laparoscopic nephrectomy, which ensures quicker recovery. It’s important for people to know that donors need not always be immediate family members. Close relatives like uncles and aunts can also donate when medically eligible. Greater awareness can help save many more lives.”

Patient Shares His Journey from Diagnosis to Recovery

Reflecting on his experience, the young patient said, “I completed my B.Tech in Chennai and have been working as a software engineer. I never had any health concerns. But in December 2023, I started experiencing headaches and vomiting. Tests showed my creatinine level was 2, and later evaluations confirmed CKD. After months of treatment, doctors recommended a kidney transplant.”

He continued, “There is no family history of kidney disease. But because my parents were unfit to donate, my uncle—who raised me like his own son—immediately offered his kidney. My aunt and cousins supported the decision from the beginning. The surgery went smoothly. My uncle has fully recovered and returned to his routine, and I am also recovering well.”

AINU Reinforces the Importance of Living Related Donation

Through this successful transplant, AINU once again underscores the importance of timely intervention, family support, and awareness about living related donation. The institute remains committed to delivering advanced, patient-centered nephrology and urology care that transforms lives.
