In a remarkable medical triumph, Naveen Kumar, a 42-year-old construction worker, made a full recovery after surviving a catastrophic fall from the third floor of an under-construction building. He was admitted to Amor Hospitals on November 22nd after being impaled by two iron rods that pierced the left side of his chest.

Patient Arrives in Critical Condition with Severe Chest Trauma

When Naveen reached the hospital, the trauma team acted swiftly to extract two iron rods embedded in his body. He arrived unconscious with critically low blood pressure at 50/30 mmHg and oxygen saturation levels too low to register. His condition turned dire—an open chest wound exposed his lung and heart, he lost 2–3 litres of blood, and his left lung ruptured completely, causing a large hemothorax.

The medical team placed him on ventilator support immediately and initiated rapid blood transfusions along with emergency resuscitation. A CT trauma scan confirmed extensive internal injuries, prompting an urgent transfer to the operation theatre.

Emergency Thoracotomy Saves the Patient’s Life

During the complex surgery, doctors performed an emergency thoracotomy. The left upper lobe of Naveen’s lung—destroyed by the impact—had to be surgically removed. As his blood pressure continued to fall due to ongoing blood loss, the team administered continuous transfusions. With only one functional lung remaining, surgeons adopted lung-protective ventilation strategies to stabilise him. Despite prolonged hypoxia, the team carefully protected his brain and other vital organs throughout the procedure.

Doctors Highlight the Complexity and Precision Behind the Successful Outcome

Dr. Kishore B. Reddy, Ortho Oncology Surgeon & Managing Director, Amor Hospitals, said, “This was among the most challenging trauma cases we have managed. Naveen’s injuries were life-threatening, and every minute was critical. The coordinated effort of our emergency, surgical, anaesthesia, and critical care teams made his survival possible. His recovery is a testament to timely intervention and world-class trauma care. We are delighted to see him return to a normal life.”

Rapid Recovery Marks an Exceptional Turnaround

In an extraordinary post-surgical recovery, doctors weaned Naveen off ventilator support within 48 hours. Soon after, he began walking with assistance, and the team removed all surgical drains. By November 28th, doctors discharged him—fully conscious, coherent, and mobile without support. During today’s follow-up visit, doctors declared him completely fit to resume daily activities.

Multidisciplinary Teamwork Ensures Successful Outcome

Surgeons Dr. Kalyan and Dr. Poojitha; Emergency specialists Dr. Nandeep and Dr. Ashok; Critical Care expert Dr. Prathyusha; and Anaesthesia specialist Dr. Jagadeesh played crucial roles in saving Naveen’s life. With this successfully executed high-risk surgery, Amor Hospitals reinforces its commitment to delivering advanced, multidisciplinary emergency and trauma care across the region.
