Boehringer Ingelheim, a biopharmaceutical company active in both human and animal health, and Palatin Technologies, Inc., a pioneer in melanocortin-based medicines, have announced a global research collaboration and licensing agreement. The partnership aims to develop an innovative therapy for retinal diseases, further strengthening Boehringer’s diversified pipeline and reinforcing its commitment to vision preservation and protection.
Tackling a Growing Burden: Diabetic Retinopathy and DME
One of the main targets of this collaboration is diabetic retinopathy (DR), including diabetic macular edema (DME)—the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. DME affects one in three people with diabetes and significantly increases healthcare costs by 30–50% compared to diabetes alone. Current treatments often involve long-term, intensive care with frequent monitoring and invasive procedures, creating a pressing need for new, more effective therapeutic approaches.
A Mechanistic Approach with Broad Potential
“Millions of people worldwide face a progressive decline in independence and quality of life due to vision loss from DR and DME,” said Remko Bakker, Head of Eye Health and Research Beyond Borders at Boehringer Ingelheim. He explained that the collaboration with Palatin leverages the promise of melanocortin receptor agonists, which address the three key drivers of retinal disease: inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and neurodegeneration. This novel approach not only aligns with Boehringer’s pipeline strategy but may also prove effective in tackling other retinal conditions with high unmet needs.
Unlocking the Promise of Melanocortin Agonists
“This collaboration with Boehringer further validates the potential of our melanocortin agonist portfolio in retinal health,” said Carl Spana, President and CEO of Palatin Technologies. “Boehringer’s global expertise and commercial reach make them the ideal partner to accelerate this program in DR and DME, ultimately delivering transformative benefits to patients worldwide,” Spana added.
Agreement Terms and Milestones
Under the agreement, Palatin will receive:
*Upfront payments
*Development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments of up to €280 million
*Tiered royalties on future net sales
This structure reflects the significant potential seen in bringing melanocortin receptor-based therapies to the retinal disease space.
A Step Forward in Vision Care
As retinal diseases continue to rise globally, this partnership marks a strategic milestone in advancing new therapies that go beyond existing standards of care. As reported by pharmabiz.com, by combining Boehringer’s global leadership with Palatin’s breakthrough science, the collaboration promises to accelerate the development of next-generation treatments—offering renewed hope to millions facing vision-threatening conditions.
