94-Year-Old Patient Successfully Treated with TAVI at Jupiter Hospital Thane

In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, successfully treated a 94-year-old patient suffering from repeated heart failure through Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). The patient was admitted under the care of Dr Nitin Burkule, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist, after experiencing severe symptoms caused by critical narrowing of the aortic valve.

Over the course of one month, the patient required two hospitalisations due to heart failure, with symptoms including breathlessness, weakness, and extreme fatigue.

A Sudden Decline in Health

Until recently, the patient had been fully independent, managing daily activities and walking without assistance. However, repeated heart failure episodes rapidly weakened him, reducing mobility and significantly affecting his quality of life.

As his condition worsened, the medical team recognised the need for a timely intervention to restore both heart function and independence.

Frailty, Not Age, Was the Main Concern

Explaining the complexities of the case, Dr Nitin Burkule emphasised that age alone was not the primary challenge.

“Age was not the biggest challenge here. The real concern was the patient’s frailty. Until recently, he was fully independent, but repeated heart failure episodes caused sudden weakness and loss of mobility,” he said.

Therefore, the medical team conducted a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether the patient was physically and mentally fit to undergo the procedure. Although he appeared physically weak, he remained mentally alert and strongly motivated to recover, which supported the decision to proceed with treatment.

Guiding the Family Toward an Informed Decision

Doctors carefully discussed treatment options with the patient and his family, explaining the possible outcomes of conservative medical therapy versus interventional treatment through TAVI.

Dr Burkule explained that patients with severe aortic valve narrowing accompanied by heart failure often experience poor outcomes if treated with medication alone.

“With conservative treatment, survival in such patients is limited and quality of life becomes extremely poor—sometimes worse than many cancers,” he said. “The patient and family wanted relief from suffering and a better quality of life, which made the decision clear.”

TAVI: A Safer Alternative for High-Risk Patients

As per the press release, the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure was performed by Dr Pratik Sane, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist, along with the structural heart team at Jupiter Hospital.

TAVI is an advanced minimally invasive procedure in which doctors place a new heart valve through a thin catheter inserted via a blood vessel in the leg, eliminating the need for open-heart surgery.

Highlighting the benefits of the technique, Dr Pratik Sane said, “TAVI was specially developed for elderly and high-risk patients who cannot undergo open-heart surgery. It is minimally invasive, safer, and allows much faster recovery, with outcomes comparable to surgical valve replacement.”

Recovery Brings Renewed Independence

Following the procedure, the patient demonstrated significant clinical improvement. His breathing eased, strength gradually returned, and mobility improved, allowing him to regain a sense of independence.

Reflecting on the broader significance of the case, Dr Sane emphasised that advanced treatment should not be denied based solely on age.

“This case shows that age alone should never prevent someone from receiving advanced treatment. What matters more is the patient’s overall health, mental alertness, and willingness to improve their quality of life,” he added.

Advanced Care Can Transform Lives

Doctors at Jupiter Hospital highlighted that timely diagnosis and access to advanced procedures such as TAVI can significantly improve outcomes, even for patients in their nineties.

This case serves as a powerful reminder that with the right expertise, technology, and personalised care, elderly patients can still regain comfort, dignity, and an improved quality of life.
