India’s Active Covid-19 Cases Cross 4,000 Mark Amid Omicron Surge

India’s active Covid-19 caseload surpassed 4,000 on Tuesday, with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reporting 4,026 active cases and five new deaths in the past 24 hours. The recent spike is largely driven by an increase in cases in Kerala, Delhi, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.

Kerala Leads with Highest Active Caseload

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases in the country. On Tuesday, the state recorded 171 new cases, pushing its total active count to 1,416.

Delhi and Maharashtra Show Rising Trends

Meanwhile, Delhi reported a sharp jump with 124 new infections, bringing its active caseload to 393. Maharashtra followed with 69 new cases, raising its tally of active infections to 494.

West Bengal Sees Modest Increase

West Bengal also witnessed an uptick, with 11 new cases, taking the total number of active patients to 372.

Current Surge Driven by Mild Omicron Sub-Variants

Speaking on the rise in infections, ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Behl confirmed that genome sequencing of samples from southern and western India points to Omicron sub-variants as the primary cause of the current surge. These sub-variants, he noted, are not classified as severe.

Health Authorities Urge Vigilance, Not Panic

“We are monitoring the situation closely,” Dr. Behl stated. “At this moment, we advise the public to remain vigilant, but there is no cause for alarm.”

As reported by TOI, this latest update underscores the importance of continued surveillance and responsible public behaviour as India navigates yet another wave of Covid-19 infections.
