In a remarkable demonstration of medical expertise, teamwork, and resilience, doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Thane successfully treated a critically ill newborn who arrived in an extremely serious condition after developing severe respiratory complications soon after birth.
Life-Threatening Start After Birth
The newborn aspirated meconium—the first stool—into her lungs at birth. As a result, she developed severe breathing difficulty, dangerously high pressure in the lungs, and a serious infection. By the time doctors referred her to KIMS Hospitals on the 10th day of life, she was in shock, dependent on high-frequency ventilation, and maintaining oxygen levels of only 75–80%.
High-Risk Transfer and Immediate Stabilisation
Transporting the baby itself posed a major challenge, as standard neonatal transport systems do not support advanced ventilation. Nevertheless, the neonatal team at KIMS Hospitals carefully coordinated the transfer, ensured safe transport, and stabilised the newborn immediately upon arrival.
A Long and Complex NICU Journey
Following admission, the baby began a prolonged and demanding stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She required constant monitoring, frequent adjustments in ventilator settings, medications to support blood pressure, and round-the-clock expert care. Even minor fluctuations in oxygen levels or vital signs required swift medical intervention.
Prolonged Ventilation and Specialised Therapy
As per the press release, the newborn remained on ventilator support for 30 days and received inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) therapy for 21 days to reduce severe pulmonary hypertension. Gradually weaning her off oxygen proved challenging and involved periods of improvement interspersed with temporary setbacks.
Doctors Highlight the Challenges
Commenting on the case, Dr Deepika Tiwari, Senior Consultant – Pediatrics and Neonatology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said,
“This baby had multiple life-threatening complications when she reached us. Managing such cases demands constant vigilance, timely decision-making, and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team. Her recovery reflects not only medical science, but also perseverance and coordinated neonatal care.”
Dr Sachin Sakharkar, In-charge NICU (Neonatology) and Consultant Pediatrics, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, added,
“The baby’s condition was extremely unstable in the initial phase. Prolonged ventilator support, careful management of pulmonary hypertension, and continuous monitoring were crucial. Each day brought new challenges, but our team remained focused on giving her the best possible chance to survive and thrive.”
Teamwork at the Core of Care
A dedicated team of neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and support staff delivered comprehensive care throughout the baby’s NICU stay. Dr Rashmi Yemul played an integral role in the newborn’s clinical management during this critical period.
A Hopeful Discharge After 38 Days
After 38 days of intensive care, the newborn showed sustained improvement and was finally discharged home. She left the hospital breathing independently and feeding completely by mouth.
A Testament to Advanced Neonatal Care
This case stands as a powerful example of how advanced neonatal care, multidisciplinary teamwork, and unwavering commitment can help even the most critically ill newborns overcome overwhelming odds.
