The Delhi government is preparing to launch a dedicated mental health programme targeting children, working professionals, and senior citizens. This initiative, developed under the AYUSH health framework, will follow a four-tier model that includes teleconsultation, counselling, OPD care, and a referral system to address varied mental health needs across age groups.
Promoting Holistic Well-being Through AYUSH
Announcing the programme, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh emphasized that the initiative aims to promote holistic well-being by integrating traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, and Unani. He noted that this will be the first focused mental health initiative under AYUSH, offering support from the first phone call to hospital-level psychiatric care, if required.
Accessible, Anonymous and Stigma-Free Care
To encourage more people to seek help, the mental health service will be anonymous and easily accessible. “Many people hesitate to talk about stress or anxiety. Through this platform, they can reach out without fear or stigma,” said the minister. The approach prioritizes privacy, empathy, and trust.
Structured, Stepwise Care Delivery
The programme’s four-tier structure ensures comprehensive care:
- Telephonic consultations through a dedicated helpline.
- Mental health counselling by trained professionals.
- In-person OPD services at four AYUSH teaching hospitals in Karol Bagh, Defence Colony, Najafgarh, and Nanak Pura.
- Referral to specialized psychiatric or allopathic care, based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), for patients requiring intensive intervention.
Addressing the Needs of Vulnerable Groups
As reported by thehindubusinessline, this initiative is especially timely, given the increasing stress levels among school children, some of whom show early signs of anxiety and aggression. Working professionals facing unrealistic targets and work-life imbalance, as well as women balancing domestic and professional roles, will also be prioritized. In addition, the programme will support elderly individuals, who often deal with loneliness, cognitive decline, and other age-related mental health issues.
Bridging Traditional Wisdom with Modern Mental Health Needs
By integrating traditional AYUSH practices with modern mental healthcare delivery, the Delhi government seeks to bridge the gap between conventional and alternative care. The model promises stepwise access to treatment, ensuring that every individual receives care tailored to their specific mental health needs.
This forward-looking programme is set to become a landmark in community-based mental health care. It combines ancient healing systems with modern accessibility and strong support structures.
