Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh and Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj have launched dedicated Lung Failure Clinics to provide comprehensive care for patients with advanced and end-stage respiratory diseases, including evaluation for lung transplantation.
The clinics will bring together pulmonologists, transplant specialists, rehabilitation experts and allied healthcare professionals to provide coordinated care from diagnosis and treatment optimisation to rehabilitation and follow-up.
The Shalimar Bagh clinic will operate Tuesdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 2 pm, while the Vasant Kunj schedule will be announced shortly.
Comprehensive Treatment and Transplant Evaluation
As per the press release, the clinics will offer advanced pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, interventional pulmonology, pulmonary rehabilitation, nutritional counselling, sleep evaluation and non-invasive ventilation support. Eligible patients will also receive pre-transplant counselling, transplant evaluation and coordinated post-transplant care.
The clinics will be led by Dr Govini Balasubramani, Director, Lung Transplant and Advanced Lung Failure, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai; Dr Vikas Maurya, Senior Director and HOD, Respiratory Medicine and Respiratory Critical Care, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh; and Dr Prashant Saxena, Principal Director and Head, Pulmonology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj.
Double-Lung Transplant Gives Young Patient New Lease of Life
The initiative follows the successful double-lung transplant of a 29-year-old physiotherapist at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh. Diagnosed with interstitial lung disease in 2021, her condition progressively worsened, eventually requiring continuous oxygen support.
After multidisciplinary evaluation, she underwent a successful double-lung transplant in May 2026. The case highlights the importance of early referral and timely transplant evaluation in progressive lung failure.
Early Referral Is Critical
Dr Govini Balasubramani said rising air pollution, tobacco exposure, occupational hazards, infections and an ageing population are contributing to advanced lung disease. He emphasised that early diagnosis, timely referral and multidisciplinary care can help slow disease progression and improve outcomes.
The new clinics aim to provide patients with advanced respiratory disease access to specialised treatment and timely assessment for lung transplantation.
