Fortis Hospital, Noida, has successfully treated a 32-year-old man with rare penile cancer using Robotic VEIL (Video Endoscopic Inguinal Lymphadenectomy), a minimally invasive procedure to remove cancerous lymph nodes in the groin.
A team led by Dr. Shailendra Kumar Goel, Director, Urology & Kidney Transplant, performed the complex five-hour surgery using the Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system.
Advanced Technology Supports Faster Recovery
The patient had a history of recurrent urinary tract infections and phimosis, a condition associated with an increased risk of penile cancer. Further evaluation confirmed cancer that had spread to a single groin lymph node, with no distant metastasis.
During the procedure, doctors used small incisions in the thigh and injected a fluorescent dye (ICG) into the patient’s feet to map the lymphatic pathways. This helped them precisely identify and remove the affected lymph nodes while protecting major blood vessels.
Unlike conventional open surgery, the robotic approach minimised skin trauma and wound-related risks. The patient experienced no skin complications and returned home within four days.

As per The Economic Times, robotic surgery is increasingly enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with greater precision while reducing surgical trauma and supporting faster recovery.
Dr. Shailendra Kumar Goel said the robotic system provided enhanced visualisation and precision, allowing the team to remove the affected lymph nodes while protecting surrounding tissues and blood vessels.
