Researchers have identified 36 genes that significantly increase the risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and chronic tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome. The findings could pave the way for new treatments targeting the biological mechanisms behind these conditions.
The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, analysed DNA from nearly 4,000 people diagnosed with OCD and chronic tic disorders. Researchers found that many of the identified genes are shared by both conditions and influence common brain pathways.
New Targets for Drug Development
As per The Economic Times, the discovery provides researchers with more than 30 potential biological targets for developing new therapies. Scientists found that these genes work in networks rather than individually, potentially allowing future treatments to target entire networks involved in the disorders.
The researchers also found that some of these genes have previously been associated with autism and schizophrenia, adding to evidence that several psychiatric conditions may share biological pathways.
Moving Beyond Symptom Management
The identified genes appear to influence how neurotransmitters transmit signals through brain circuits. Therefore, understanding these genetic and biological pathways could help scientists develop drugs that address the underlying causes of OCD and tic disorders rather than simply managing their symptoms.
