Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, has partnered with Medtronic India to launch a dedicated Renal Denervation Therapy Centre for the treatment of resistant hypertension. The centre will focus on patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite taking multiple medications.

By integrating advanced interventional technology, expert-led care, and structured treatment pathways, the hospital aims to deliver comprehensive and long-term blood pressure management. In addition to renal denervation therapy for eligible patients, the facility will offer detailed evaluations, patient counselling, and medication optimisation.

Expert Leadership and Multidisciplinary Care

The centre will operate under the leadership of Dr Rahul Gupta, Director and Cardiologist; Dr Bharat Shah, Director and Nephrologist; Dr V M Reddy, Senior Consultant Cardiologist; and Dr Prashant Rajput, Senior Consultant Nephrologist.

Together, their combined expertise in cardiac and renal care will ensure specialised and coordinated management for patients with difficult-to-control blood pressure. Moreover, the centre will bring cardiologists, nephrologists, and internal medicine specialists together to deliver holistic and personalised treatment plans.

Rising Burden of Hypertension in India

Hypertension cases continue to rise due to modern lifestyles marked by high stress, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and increasing obesity. Consequently, the need for early diagnosis and sustained management has become more urgent than ever.

Many patients ignore warning signs such as persistent headaches, dizziness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, and blurred vision until serious complications develop. Hypertension remains one of the leading causes of premature death globally and significantly contributes to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other cardiovascular conditions in India.

Despite the availability of medications, several patients struggle to maintain adequate blood pressure control due to delayed diagnosis, irregular follow-ups, poor awareness, high salt intake, obesity, and sedentary habits. In some cases, blood pressure remains elevated even after multiple medications—a condition known as resistant hypertension.

Structured and Long-Term Blood Pressure Management

Through this specialised centre, Gleneagles Hospital aims to strengthen the management of complex hypertension by introducing coordinated care pathways and consistent follow-up protocols.

As per the press release, the team will focus not only on advanced interventional therapies but also on patient education, lifestyle counselling, medication adjustment, and regular monitoring. Ultimately, the goal is to help patients achieve sustained blood pressure control and significantly reduce the risk of complications such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney damage, and vision loss.

Renal Denervation: An Additional Therapeutic Option

Dr Rahul Gupta emphasised that resistant hypertension often remains silent yet substantially increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. He noted that while many patients are on treatment, their blood pressure may still remain uncontrolled.

He explained that renal denervation therapy provides an additional option for carefully selected patients whose blood pressure does not respond to medicines alone. By combining lifestyle guidance, optimal medication, and advanced interventional solutions, the hospital aims to achieve durable blood pressure control.

Protecting Kidney Health Through Early Intervention

Dr Bharat Shah highlighted that uncontrolled hypertension severely affects kidney health. Long-standing high blood pressure can progressively damage kidney function and may lead to chronic kidney disease.

He stated that the specialised centre will enable early identification of high-risk patients and provide structured multidisciplinary care. Renal denervation therapy, he explained, can benefit selected patients by targeting overactive nerves that contribute to persistent high blood pressure. As a result, this integrated model will help prevent long-term organ damage.

A Collaborative Model for Improved Outcomes

Dr Bipin Chevale, CEO of Gleneagles Hospital, observed that hypertension management often suffers from delayed diagnosis, fragmented care, and inconsistent follow-up. Therefore, partnering with Medtronic allows the hospital to adopt a more coordinated and structured approach by integrating clinical expertise with advanced technology and patient-centric pathways.

He concluded that this collaboration aims to deliver sustained blood pressure control and reduce cardiovascular risks for patients with resistant hypertension.

Echoing this sentiment, Mandeep Singh Kumar, Managing Director and Vice President of Medtronic India, stated that resistant hypertension remains an under-recognised but growing challenge in cardiovascular care. Through this partnership, Medtronic will work closely with clinical teams to strengthen awareness, improve diagnosis, and support structured management approaches.

Together, the collaboration seeks to enhance long-term outcomes and improve quality of life for patients living with complex and resistant hypertension.
