ICMR Transfers Indigenous Cancer and Vaccine Technologies for Commercial Development

India’s healthcare research ecosystem has taken a major step forward as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) transfers three locally developed biomedical technologies to industry partners for further development and commercialisation. The move aims to transform publicly funded research into affordable healthcare solutions for patients.

Indigenous Technologies Move Closer to Patients

Under the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative, ICMR has licensed three biomedical innovations to Indian companies. These include SHetA2, an experimental anti-HPV therapeutic candidate for treating cervical precancerous lesions, along with two next-generation vaccine technologies targeting bacterial infections such as typhoid, paratyphoid, and Shigella.

The cancer-related technology has been transferred to Emcure Pharmaceuticals, while the vaccine technologies developed by ICMR researchers have been licensed to Biological E for further development, manufacturing, and potential commercial use.

New Hope for Cervical Cancer Prevention

SHetA2 was developed by scientists at the ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR) in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oklahoma. The therapy is designed to target HPV-related cervical lesions, which can progress to cervical cancer if left untreated.

If successful through further development and regulatory evaluation, this innovation could provide a more targeted and less invasive treatment option for women affected by cervical precancerous conditions.

Advanced Vaccines Against Infectious Diseases

In addition to cancer research, ICMR has transferred two vaccine platforms developed by scientists at the ICMR-National Institute of Research in Bacterial Infections (NIRBI), Kolkata.

These vaccine technologies aim to provide improved protection against enteric bacterial infections, including typhoid, paratyphoid, and Shigella. Such developments are particularly important as rising antimicrobial resistance continues to make infectious disease management more challenging.
