IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi Launch Centre of Excellence for AI in Healthcare

IIT Delhi, AIIMS Delhi Sign MoU to Establish AI-CoE Credits: IIT Delhi Press release

IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi, two of India’s leading academic and research institutions, have officially joined forces to establish a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AI-CoE). The MoU was signed by Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, during a formal ceremony held at IIT Delhi.

Driving Innovation in National Health Programs

As reported by the IIT Delhi Press release, the AI-CoE will develop AI-powered solutions to strengthen national health initiatives and programs across India. This collaboration builds on the ₹330 crore grant awarded to the institutes last year by the Ministry of Education under the “Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India” initiative. The newly established centre will act as the implementation platform for this prestigious grant.

Leadership Voices Express Optimism

Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration. “This MoU marks the beginning of transformative research that could reshape healthcare delivery across the country,” he stated confidently.

Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, echoed this vision. He said, “Our partnership with AIIMS Delhi will revolutionise the role of Artificial Intelligence. It will help make healthcare more affordable and accessible.” We proudly shape this national Centre of Excellence and remain committed to delivering impactful outcomes for India.”

Patient-Centric Vision at the Core

Dr. Krithika Rangarajan, Chief Project Manager from AIIMS Delhi, will spearhead the initiative from the healthcare side. “As we enter this exciting frontier, we remain focused on placing patients at the heart of our innovation. Our aim is to build sustainable systems that serve every citizen,” she said.

Building a Global Model for AI and Healthcare Integration

From IIT Delhi, Prof. Chetan Arora will lead the Centre as Chief Project Manager. He emphasized the broader goals of the collaboration: “The AI-CoE will become a premier research and resource hub at both national and global levels. By developing indigenous AI technologies, we aim to upgrade public health systems, empower healthcare workers through upskilling, and make quality care accessible—especially in remote and underserved communities.”

Prof. Arora further highlighted the legacy of cooperation between the two institutes. He stated, “IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi share a strong history of collaborative research.” Through the AI-CoE, we intend to set a global benchmark for integrating healthcare with AI research.”
