Kauvery Hospitals Targets 5,000 Beds Within 3 – 4 Years with Major Expansion Plan

Kauvery Hospitals, a Chennai-headquartered healthcare group, is planning its fastest-ever expansion, with a target of doubling its bed capacity from approximately 2,500 to 5,000 over the next three to four years. Dr Manivannan Selvaraj, Founder and Managing Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, said the expansion will strengthen the hospital chain’s presence across South India.

The expansion strategy includes increasing capacity at existing hospitals in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru while entering new cities such as Madurai and Coimbatore. The group aims to extend access to quality multispecialty healthcare across more locations.

Expansion Across South India

Dr Selvaraj said the hospital group is entering its fastest growth phase after building strong clinical capabilities and an experienced team.

Founded in 1999 with a 30-bed hospital in Tiruchi, Kauvery Hospitals has grown into a multispecialty healthcare network with 12 hospitals across Tiruchi, Chennai, Salem, Hosur, Tirunelveli and Bengaluru. The group is also developing a large hospital in North Chennai.

Currently, the company generates approximately ₹2,600 crore in revenue and employs nearly 18,000 people. Its growth accelerated following the acquisition of listed entity KMC Speciality Hospital in 2009, which helped the group secure private equity funding. It subsequently entered Chennai in 2012 and achieved operational break-even within two years.

No Immediate Plans for IPO

Despite its ambitious expansion plans, Kauvery Hospitals is not rushing to enter the public markets. Dr Selvaraj said the group plans to fund its growth through internal accruals, as several of its hospitals have matured into cash-generating units.

Although the company has held discussions with investment bankers to understand market conditions, it has not yet evaluated specific plans for pre-IPO funding. Its last fundraising exercise took place approximately three years ago.

Focus on Operational Efficiency and Technology

As hospitals face rising operating expenses and infrastructure costs, Kauvery Hospitals is focusing on improving operational efficiency to manage healthcare inflation.

The group has centralised several non-clinical functions, including human resources and finance, at its Tiruchi facility. It is also using digitally connected intensive care units (ICUs), allowing critical care specialists to monitor patients across multiple hospital locations.

Additionally, the hospital group spends around 3–3.5% of its annual turnover on technology, including enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, hospital management software and cybersecurity.

On artificial intelligence (AI), Dr Selvaraj sees opportunities in administrative operations and clinical documentation. However, he emphasised that AI will support doctors rather than replace them.

Rising Healthcare Costs and Pricing Challenges

Addressing concerns about hospital pricing, Dr Selvaraj said healthcare costs must be understood in the context of the expenses involved in delivering medical services.

He noted that the cost of consumables and several imported high-end medical devices had increased by nearly 30% over the previous year, while construction costs had risen by approximately 20%.

He also highlighted the need to balance the expectations of patients, government authorities and regulators. Expanding health insurance coverage, he added, could improve the financial sustainability of healthcare delivery.

Bringing Quality Healthcare to Smaller Cities

Kauvery Hospitals aims to differentiate itself by providing advanced healthcare services beyond major metropolitan cities. Drawing on its origins in Tiruchi, the group believes patients should not have to travel outside their hometowns to access quality medical treatment.

Its strategy focuses on bringing healthcare standards comparable to those in major cities to smaller urban centres, particularly tier-2 locations. The planned expansion into Madurai, Coimbatore and other cities reflects this approach. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Kauvery Hospitals is accelerating its South India expansion, with plans to double its bed capacity to 5,000 within the next three to four years while focusing on technology, operational efficiency and wider access to quality healthcare.
