KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, has introduced advanced radiation oncology technologies, including the TrueBeam Linear Accelerator integrated with Brainlab Dynamic Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT). The new systems aim to improve the precision of cancer treatment by targeting tumours accurately while minimising radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
The technologies also enable real-time monitoring of patient movements and breathing, helping doctors deliver safer and more personalised radiation therapy.
Advanced Technology to Improve Cancer Care
Dr B. Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Group of Hospitals, inaugurated the new technologies. He highlighted the hospital’s commitment to bringing advanced medical technologies to patients in Telangana and neighbouring regions.
He added that combining modern treatment systems with the expertise of experienced medical professionals would help improve access to quality cancer care and support more patient-focused treatment.
TrueBeam Enables Precise Radiation Delivery
According to Dr T. Pratap Reddy, Head of Radiation Oncology at KIMS Hospitals, the integration of Brainlab Dynamic SGRT with the TrueBeam Linear Accelerator represents an important development in the hospital’s radiation oncology services.
The system offers real-time monitoring of patient movements, six-dimensional (6D) positioning corrections and respiratory motion management. These features help improve treatment accuracy and consistency while maintaining patient safety.
Furthermore, the TrueBeam system supports several advanced radiation therapy techniques, including Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery/Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SRS/SBRT).
These techniques allow doctors to focus radiation more precisely on cancerous tumours while reducing exposure to nearby healthy tissues.
Real-Time Monitoring Enhances Treatment Accuracy
The integrated Brainlab Dynamic SGRT technology uses non-contact monitoring to track the patient’s body surface and movements during radiation treatment.
When combined with 6D couch corrections and respiratory motion management, the system helps maintain accurate patient positioning throughout the procedure. As a result, doctors can deliver radiation more consistently and precisely.
Benefits for Breast Cancer Radiation Therapy
The technology also supports procedures such as Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH), which is commonly used during radiation treatment for breast cancer.
During this technique, patients hold a deep breath for a short period while receiving radiation. In appropriately selected patients, this helps reduce radiation exposure to the heart and improves the safety of treatment.
Dr B. Abhinay, Chief Executive Officer, and Dr Sambit Sahu, Medical Director, KIMS Group of Hospitals, also attended the inauguration. As reported by MediCircle, the introduction of TrueBeam and Brainlab Dynamic SGRT strengthens KIMS Hospitals’ radiation oncology capabilities, supporting more precise and personalised cancer treatment.
