KIMS Hospitals, Thane, successfully treated a woman in her 50s with a massive uterine fibroid — a condition that affects nearly one in three Indian women over 35. The case highlights the urgent need for women to prioritize their health and seek timely medical care.
Patient’s Journey and Symptoms
For almost four years, the patient endured progressive abdominal swelling, urinary difficulty, and painful leg swelling. She dismissed these symptoms while caring for her family, assuming they were a normal part of life.
When she finally sought medical attention, doctors discovered a fibroid nearly the size of a seven-month pregnancy. The mass had completely overtaken her uterus and ovaries, compressing surrounding organs and major blood vessels. This led to bladder obstruction, risk of kidney damage, and heavy menstrual bleeding that caused anemia.
Advanced Keyhole Surgery
“This was not just a medical case but a story of how women, especially in India, often ignore their own health needs while caring for others,” said Dr. Sujata Rathod, Consultant Gynecologist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, who led the surgical team.
As per the press release, the team performed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, successfully removing the large mass through keyhole surgery. Dr. Rathod explained that with proper planning and expertise, even very large fibroids can be removed minimally invasively.
Understanding Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that affect 30–35% of Indian women during their reproductive years. Despite being common, awareness about fibroids remains low. Many women ignore symptoms such as heavy bleeding, bloating, or pelvic pain, often delaying treatment due to family responsibilities. Unfortunately, this delay can turn a treatable condition into a complex surgical challenge.
Warning Signs Women Should Never Ignore
- Unexplained abdominal fullness or bloating
- Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
- Persistent pelvic discomfort or pain
- Swelling in the legs or urinary difficulties
“Every woman must understand that her health matters as much as her family’s,” Dr. Rathod emphasized. “Ignoring symptoms can lead to bigger problems that affect your quality of life. For women who wish to preserve fertility, myomectomy can be offered as a treatment option.”
