In a major step towards improving maternal and child healthcare services across India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched JANANI (Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care) during the recently concluded National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity – Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future.
The Ministry developed JANANI as a service-oriented digital platform to comprehensively monitor and maintain digital health records of women during their reproductive years. As an upgraded version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, the platform creates a longitudinal health record by capturing critical healthcare events across the continuum of care.
Platform Ensures End-to-End Maternal and Child Care Tracking
JANANI aims to strengthen maternal and child healthcare delivery by enabling seamless tracking of services at every stage. The platform covers:
- Antenatal care
- Delivery preparedness
- Institutional delivery
- Postnatal care
- Newborn care
- Home-based newborn and young child care
- Family planning services
By enabling continuous monitoring and timely interventions, JANANI ensures continuity of care and improves healthcare access for women and children.
QR-Enabled Digital MCH Cards Introduced
One of the platform’s key features is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) Cards. These digital cards improve portability and provide easy access to health records across healthcare facilities.
Additionally, JANANI incorporates:
- Automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies
- Real-time dashboards for supervisory review
- Due-list generation for tracking healthcare services
As a result, healthcare workers and administrators can ensure timely monitoring, follow-ups, and targeted interventions for beneficiaries.
JANANI Integrates with National Health Platforms
As reported by pib.gov.in, the platform also offers strong interoperability features. It integrates with national platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN to facilitate seamless data exchange and better programme coordination.
This integration strengthens beneficiary tracking across sectors while improving overall monitoring and service delivery efficiency.
Multiple Registration Options Improve Accessibility
To enhance accessibility and prevent duplication of records, JANANI allows beneficiary registration using multiple unique identifiers, including:
- ABHA
- Aadhaar-based OTP authentication
- Aadhaar biometric verification
- Mobile number
Moreover, the platform includes a pan-India search functionality, ensuring continuity of care for migratory populations.
JANANI also enables self-registration through web and mobile platforms, thereby encouraging beneficiaries to actively participate in managing their healthcare journey.
Platform Supports Timely Healthcare Interventions
JANANI supports citizens by helping schedule and monitor antenatal care visits and immunizations. Furthermore, the platform sends alerts and reminders to ensure that beneficiaries do not miss critical healthcare milestones.
The platform also provides:
- Access to digital MCH cards
- Information on nearby healthcare facilities
- Details about the expected place of delivery
- Health education and nutritional guidance
Consequently, JANANI empowers women and families to make informed healthcare decisions throughout pregnancy and early childhood care.
Digital Reform Aims to Improve Maternal and Child Health Outcomes
Overall, JANANI represents a major structural reform in maternal and child healthcare administration. By integrating digital authentication, real-time monitoring, and inter-sectoral convergence, the platform aims to improve service coverage, strengthen accountability, and reduce maternal and child mortality indicators over the long term.
Platform Records Significant Early Adoption
So far, JANANI has achieved:
- 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations
- More than 30 lakh pregnant women registrations
- Over 30 lakh digital MCH cards generated
- More than 1 lakh biometric verifications
These figures highlight the rapid adoption and growing reach of the platform across the country.
Government Reinforces Commitment to Digital Healthcare
The launch of JANANI reflects the Government’s continued commitment to ensuring accessible, equitable, and quality healthcare services. Through digital enablement and integrated care delivery, the initiative aims to strengthen maternal and child healthcare outcomes nationwide.
