Artificial Kidney Aims to Reduce Dialysis Burden

A new implantable artificial kidney could offer a less painful alternative to conventional dialysis for people with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). The device, called Holly, is designed to filter blood continuously inside the body, potentially reducing the need for repeated hospital-based dialysis sessions.

India faces a major kidney disease burden, with more than 2 lakh new ESKD cases reported every year. However, only around 6–10% of patients receive dialysis, while barely 1% undergo kidney transplantation.

Device Works Like a Continuous Kidney

Developed by urologists Dr Nikhil Shah and Dr Hiep Nguyen, Holly is surgically implanted and connected to blood vessels in the pelvis. It is designed to continuously filter waste from the blood, unlike conventional dialysis, which patients generally undergo two to three times a week.

The device also connects to a bedside machine that removes excess water. Patients could potentially use this system at a convenient time, such as during the night.

Could Improve Quality of Life

As per the Times of India, doctors believe the technology could give patients greater freedom to work, travel and carry out daily activities without regularly visiting dialysis centres. It could also potentially serve as a bridge to transplantation or as a long-term treatment for some patients.

Human Trials Yet to Begin

The device remains in the pre-clinical stage. Earlier animal studies reportedly showed promising results, and the US FDA granted Holly a breakthrough device designation in 2025. An additional animal study is expected in 2027 before human clinical trials begin in India.

The device is already being manufactured in Kochi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. If clinical trials establish its safety and effectiveness, the implant could eventually reduce dependence on dialysis centres and provide patients with a more convenient form of kidney replacement therapy.
