NITI Aayog has highlighted the need to streamline regulations governing India’s professional services sector, including doctors, lawyers, engineers, nurses and chartered accountants. The proposed reforms aim to reduce regulatory barriers, improve professional mobility and strengthen the sector’s contribution to economic growth.
The think tank has called for greater consistency in licensing, registration and professional standards across different sectors. It also emphasised the need to modernise regulatory frameworks as India seeks to expand its services economy.
Easier Licensure and Professional Mobility
At present, different professional bodies follow separate rules for education, registration and licensing. As a result, professionals can face difficulties when moving between States or entering new markets.
As per The Indian Express, NITI Aayog has identified reforms in professional regulation as an important step towards improving productivity and supporting India’s ambition to become a larger global services hub.
For healthcare, such reforms could help strengthen the systems governing doctors and nurses while ensuring consistent standards for education, registration and professional practice.
Boosting Economic Growth
The proposed changes are also linked to India’s broader economic ambitions. By simplifying regulations and improving the ease of doing business for professionals, the government aims to encourage greater participation, investment and innovation in the services sector.
However, experts emphasise that regulatory simplification must go hand in hand with strong quality and safety standards. A balanced framework could therefore improve professional mobility while protecting consumers and maintaining standards across critical sectors.
