Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on Tuesday launched AI-powered screening devices for the early detection of breast cancer, cervical cancer, and refractive errors. The launch marks a major step toward improving preventive healthcare and making diagnostics accessible across Punjab.
Technology-Driven Screening Solutions
As reported by Hindustan Times, the initiative, implemented in collaboration with ACT Grants, introduces portable, radiation-free, AI-enabled devices across eight districts of Punjab. These include:
- Thermalytix by Niramai – for breast cancer screening
- Smart Scope by Periwinkle – for cervical cancer screening
- Portable Autorefractometer by Forus Health – for refractive error screening
The launch event featured live demonstrations of all devices, showcasing their potential to transform community-level health screening.
Addressing the Cancer Burden
Calling the initiative a historic leap toward equitable healthcare, Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized the importance of early detection and timely treatment.
He cited data from the ICMR National Cancer Registry Programme, which reported 42,288 new cancer cases in Punjab in 2024, reflecting a 7% increase over 2023. He also highlighted NFHS-5 findings. Only 0.3% of women aged 30–49 in Punjab have ever undergone breast cancer screening. Just 2.4% have been screened for cervical cancer. This underscores the urgent need for action.
Bringing Screening to the Grassroots
Dr. Balbir Singh explained that these AI-based devices are designed for use at primary health centers, allowing for rapid, non-invasive, and highly accurate screenings. The state targets conducting at least 600 eye check-ups and 300 breast and cervical cancer screenings per day. This will significantly improve early detection rates and reduce the patient load on tertiary care hospitals.
