In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, announced the development of a modern cancer hospital along with nursing and dental colleges at the Hamirpur Medical College complex. The state government will undertake the project at an estimated cost of ₹1,000 crore.
Inspection of Medical College Site
During his visit to Hamirpur, the Chief Minister inspected the ongoing construction works at the medical college and reviewed the proposed site for the upcoming cancer care centre. He stated that the new facility will bring quality healthcare services closer to people’s homes and significantly reduce the need for out-of-state treatment.
Addressing Rising Cancer Burden
According to an official statement, Himachal Pradesh reports one of the highest numbers of cancer cases in the country after the north-eastern states. Therefore, the government has decided to establish a dedicated cancer hospital in Hamirpur to ensure accessible and high-quality cancer care within the state.
New Specialist Departments Approved
Furthermore, the Chief Minister informed that the government has recently approved 11 new specialist departments for the Hamirpur Cancer Hospital. These include medical oncology, surgical oncology, pain relief and supportive care, nuclear medicine, anaesthesia and critical care, and pathology.
In addition, the hospital will house departments for paediatric oncology, radiology and imaging, gynaecologic oncology, radiation therapy, as well as stem cell and bone marrow transplantation. By offering these services under one roof, the state aims to deliver comprehensive cancer care at a single location.
Reducing Patient Travel and Financial Burden
As reported by Hindustan Times, Sukhu emphasised that providing advanced treatment within Himachal Pradesh will prevent patients from travelling outside the state. Consequently, this initiative will save families both time and money while ensuring timely access to specialised care.
Focus on Early Detection and Systemic Reform
Highlighting the rising incidence of cancer cases, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of systematic screening, prevention, monitoring, proper record-keeping, and early diagnosis. He underscored the need to strengthen healthcare systems to respond effectively to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.
Strengthening Medical Colleges in the State
During an interaction with doctors at Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur, Sukhu observed that many medical colleges in the state have largely become referral institutions. Therefore, he called for systemic improvements to ensure that comprehensive and advanced healthcare services remain available within Himachal Pradesh itself.
