Sanofi Acquires Vicebio to Strengthen Respiratory Vaccine Pipeline

Sanofi has entered into an agreement to acquire Vicebio Ltd, a privately held biotechnology firm based in London, UK. This acquisition brings with it a promising early-stage combination vaccine candidate targeting respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (hMPV), two significant respiratory pathogens. The deal also grants Sanofi access to Vicebio’s proprietary ‘Molecular Clamp’ technology, enhancing its ability to design and develop innovative vaccines.

Enhancing Respiratory Vaccine Portfolio

With this addition, Sanofi strengthens its presence in the respiratory vaccine space, where it already plays a key role in flu and RSV prevention. The new vaccine candidate introduces a non-mRNA alternative, giving physicians and patients more options in addressing RSV and hMPV infections. This move also aligns with Sanofi’s broader mission to deliver next-generation vaccine solutions across various age groups.

Breakthrough ‘Molecular Clamp’ Technology

Vicebio’s ‘Molecular Clamp’ technology introduces a novel method that stabilizes viral proteins in their native shapes, enabling the immune system to better recognize and attack the virus. This innovation drives the development of fully liquid combination vaccines that store safely at standard refrigeration temperatures (2–8°C). As a result, it removes the need for freezing or freeze-drying and streamlines vaccine production, storage, and distribution. Manufacturers can also distribute these vaccines in prefilled syringes, improving safety, ease of use, and operational efficiency.

Sanofi Reaffirms Commitment to Innovation

“Vicebio’s ‘Molecular Clamp’ technology introduces a purposefully simple but thoughtful approach to further improve vaccine designs at a time when respiratory viral infections continue to impact millions globally,” said Jean-François Toussaint, Global Head of Research and Development Vaccines at Sanofi. “This acquisition furthers Sanofi’s dedication to vaccine innovation with the potential to develop next-generation combination vaccines that could protect older adults against multiple respiratory viruses with a single immunization.”

Vicebio’s Pipeline Targets Major Respiratory Threats

As per the Sanofi press release, Vicebio’s vaccine pipeline includes VXB-241, a bivalent candidate targeting RSV and hMPV, now in exploratory Phase 1 trials in older adults. It also includes VXB-251, a preclinical trivalent vaccine designed to protect against RSV, hMPV, and parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV3). These viruses, though distinct, often circulate together and contribute to seasonal surges in respiratory illness. They are known to cause lower respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, particularly affecting older adults and leading to hospitalizations, frailty, and even mortality.

Vicebio Looks Forward to Global Impact

Emmanuel Hanon, CEO of Vicebio, expressed optimism about the acquisition: “We are excited to join Sanofi. Their global scale and deep expertise in vaccine development provide the ideal environment to fully realize the potential of our innovative technology. As part of the Sanofi team, we look forward to advancing our platform and pipeline to deliver meaningful benefits for patients and public health.”

Through this acquisition, Sanofi strengthens its leadership in vaccines by adopting pioneering technology. It also broadens its impact on global respiratory health.
