Two nurses affected by the Nipah virus continue to remain in a critical condition in West Bengal. One nurse has slipped into a coma, while the other is currently on ventilator support at a private hospital in Barasat, where both were employed. Their condition has raised serious concern among health authorities.
Infection Reconfirmed by National Institute of Virology
Initially, doctors tested samples from the two nurses at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalyani, on Sunday, January 11, 2026. Subsequently, the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, reconfirmed the Nipah virus infection on Wednesday, January 14, according to sources.
Doctor and Nurse Hospitalised After Showing Symptoms
As reported by The Hindu, meanwhile, a doctor and another nurse who came into close contact with the infected nurses developed Nipah-like symptoms. Authorities immediately admitted them to the Infectious Diseases and Beleghata General Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday. Their samples have been sent for Nipah testing, while doctors continue close medical observation.
Source of Infection Still Under Investigation
At present, officials have not identified the source of the Nipah outbreak. Health authorities continue to investigate all possible transmission routes to prevent further spread of the virus.
Extensive Contact Tracing Underway Across Three Districts
In response, the state has intensified contact tracing efforts. So far, officials have advised over 120 individuals to isolate themselves. These include hospital staff, family members, and ambulance drivers who may have come into contact with the infected nurses. Additionally, authorities have sent samples from several contacts for testing, while three co-workers of the nurses have been temporarily taken off duty.
Currently, contact tracing operations are actively underway across North 24 Parganas, Bardhaman, and Nadia districts.
Family Unaware of Severity Initially
Speaking to the media, a relative of one of the nurses said, “She came home because she had a cold and fever. We had no idea it could be something more serious. She is our family, and we lived together as families normally do.”
Understanding the Nipah Virus
Nipah is a zoonotic disease that typically causes influenza-like symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, sore throat, and respiratory issues. In severe cases, it can lead to convulsions and acute respiratory distress. The virus can sometimes spread through animals, including pigs.
Government Issues Helplines and Public Advisory
To support the public, the West Bengal government has activated helpline numbers — 03323330180, 9874708858, and 9836046212 — to address queries and concerns. At the same time, officials have urged citizens not to panic but to remain alert, follow hygiene protocols, and cooperate with health authorities.
As monitoring continues, health officials remain focused on containment, early detection, and preventing further transmission of the virus.
