Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda launched several new initiatives, including the enhanced Tele MANAS App under the National Tele Mental Health Programme, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day in New Delhi. The upgraded app now features a multilingual user interface, an interactive chatbot for user engagement, and an emergency module designed to offer real-time guidance and support during crises.
With these updates, the Tele MANAS App will be available in ten regional languages, in addition to English and Hindi, significantly expanding accessibility across the country.
India’s Commitment to Mental Health Access
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Nadda reaffirmed India’s commitment to providing equitable, affordable, and inclusive mental health services for all. He emphasized that the introduction of new features in the Tele MANAS App demonstrates the government’s focus on strengthening preparedness for mental health emergencies and leveraging digital innovations to extend care to every corner of the nation.
Proven Impact and Growing Reach
Highlighting the initiative’s success, the Union Health Minister said Tele MANAS has handled around 28 lakh calls since its inception. Trained counsellors provide support in over 20 languages. He added that around 4,000 people reach out daily. This reflects the growing trust in the service and its effectiveness in addressing mental health concerns.
Focus on Digital Inclusion and Global Alignment
Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava noted that mental health is a special focus of this year’s United Nations theme, aligning India’s initiatives with global priorities. She emphasized that India’s digital health programmes, including Tele MANAS, are central to achieving the goal of universal health coverage and ensuring mental well-being for all citizens.
Deepika Padukone Named Mental Health Ambassador
In a significant move to raise public awareness, actress Deepika Padukone has been designated as Mental Health Ambassador. Her involvement aims to encourage conversations around mental health and reduce stigma. She also promotes the use of accessible mental health services through platforms like Tele MANAS.
