Droupadi Murmu stated that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital health are transforming modern medicine. However, she firmly emphasised that human empathy remains irreplaceable in patient care.
Address at AIIMS Rajkot Convocation
While addressing the first convocation ceremony at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rajkot, the President noted that the medical landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace. She pointed out that technologies such as AI and robotics have significantly reshaped healthcare delivery.
At the same time, she urged graduating students to stay prepared to adopt these innovations. By doing so, they can enhance their clinical skills and improve treatment outcomes.
Empathy Remains Central to Patient Care
Despite the rise of technology, President Murmu underscored the enduring importance of compassion in medicine. She explained that kind words, a reassuring smile, and attentive listening often have a profound impact on patients—sometimes even more than medication.
Therefore, she reminded young doctors that medicine is not merely a profession but a lifelong commitment to serving humanity.
Focus on Regional Healthcare Priorities
Furthermore, the President highlighted the need for institutions like AIIMS to align their growth with regional healthcare needs. Specifically, she urged AIIMS Rajkot to prioritise maternal and child health, as well as genetic conditions such as Sickle cell anaemia, especially in rural and tribal populations.
She expressed confidence that the institute will integrate these priorities into its research and healthcare services, thereby ensuring accessible, affordable, and high-quality tertiary care.
Strengthening Healthcare Through Education and Research
As reported by Business Standard, President Murmu also acknowledged the broader role of AIIMS institutions across India. She noted that they contribute not only to medical education and patient care but also to research and policy development, thereby strengthening the national healthcare system.
Since AIIMS Rajkot is a relatively new institution, she advised it to chart a clear roadmap. In particular, she stressed the importance of good governance, transparency, and optimal resource utilisation to achieve excellence.
Call for Professional Responsibility and Integrity
Addressing the graduating students directly, the President reminded them of their responsibility as custodians of public health. She emphasised that the white coat symbolises immense trust, which must be upheld with dedication.
Moreover, she highlighted that the medical profession demands not only scientific expertise but also patience, humility, and sensitivity. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, she encouraged students to dedicate themselves to service and derive fulfilment from it.
Importantly, she concluded that while professional competence is essential, moral integrity is even more critical. She expressed confidence that the graduates will uphold the highest ideals and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
