The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Technische Universität (TU) Dresden, Germany. The partnership aims to reduce the cost of robotic surgical technology and boost the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in surgical oncology and liquid biopsy.
Leadership and Objectives
Prof. Ursula Staudinger, head of TU Dresden, and Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi, signed the agreement. This collaboration will focus on translational research, the clinical integration of digital tools, and joint incubation of healthcare startups.
Addressing High Patient Load with Low-Cost Technology
As reported by indianexpress, highlighting the need for affordable healthcare solutions, Dr. M. D. Ray, Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS, explained that conventional robotic surgeries currently cost between ₹2–3 lakh. Given the high patient load at AIIMS, there is an urgent demand for cost-effective alternatives.
Focus Areas of Research
According to Dr. Ray, the joint research will concentrate on three critical domains:
- Robotic surgeries in oncology
- AI-assisted surgical oncology
- Development of liquid biopsy techniques
Liquid biopsy, a non-invasive diagnostic method, examines body fluids such as blood to detect early signs of cancer or other illnesses.
Funding and Impact
The collaboration also includes financial support to develop low-cost liquid biopsy solutions. “Early diagnosis is key,” Dr. Ray emphasized. “If we can detect cancer sooner, we can initiate treatment earlier, improving outcomes significantly.”
This international partnership marks a promising step toward making cutting-edge cancer diagnosis and treatment accessible and affordable in India.
