AIIMS Delhi Introduces India’s First Portable MRI System

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi has introduced India’s first portable MRI system, enabling bedside brain imaging for critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs). With this advancement, clinicians can now avoid shifting unstable patients for scans, thereby improving both safety and efficiency.

Eliminating Risky Patient Transfers

As reported by TOI, the ultra-low-field MRI device can be wheeled directly to the patient’s bedside. As a result, doctors no longer need to transport patients to conventional MRI suites—a process that often poses significant risks, especially for those on ventilators or in critical condition. This shift ensures safer imaging without compromising patient stability.

Enhancing Diagnosis Across Critical Conditions

Doctors have already begun using the system at the Centre for Neurological Conditions under the guidance of Dr Shailesh Gaikwad. The technology supports rapid diagnosis in conditions such as stroke, head injuries, and post-operative neurosurgical cases. Moreover, it proves valuable in ICU monitoring and paediatric care, where timely intervention is crucial.

Improving Speed and Clinical Decision-Making

Clinicians highlight speed and safety as the system’s greatest advantages. In time-sensitive emergencies like stroke, where every minute counts, bedside imaging allows doctors to make faster and more informed treatment decisions. Consequently, this capability can significantly improve patient outcomes.

Strengthening Critical Care and Research Capabilities

AIIMS Delhi introduced the system after securing regulatory approval, with support from Radiosurgery Global. Experts believe this innovation will not only expand access to brain imaging in critical care settings but also strengthen research in point-of-care neurodiagnostics.
