In a major step to strengthen India’s biomedical and clinical research ecosystem, directors of 20 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) institutions on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Pan-India collaborative research consortium.
MoU Signed at AIIMS Directors’ Meet in New Delhi
The agreement was signed during the meeting of AIIMS Directors held at AIIMS, New Delhi. This initiative marks a significant move towards coordinated, multi-institutional research aligned with national health priorities.
Joint Research, Clinical Trials and Knowledge Sharing
Under the MoU, AIIMS institutions across the country will collaborate on joint research projects, large multi-centric studies, and clinical trials. In addition, the consortium will promote researcher exchange programmes and enable structured sharing of data, expertise, and best practices among participating institutes.
As reported by TOI, the signatory institutions include AIIMS New Delhi, Bathinda, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bibinagar, Bilaspur, Deoghar, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kalyani, Madurai, Mangalagiri, Nagpur, Patna, Raebareli, Raipur, Rajkot and Rishikesh.
National Research Network to Address Priority Health Challenges
Officials said the consortium envisions a national research network that will harness the combined clinical expertise, infrastructure, and extensive patient base of the AIIMS system. Through this collaborative approach, the network aims to address health challenges of national importance more effectively.
During the meeting, directors discussed identifying national research priorities, strengthening multi-centric clinical trials, and expanding research in emerging areas. These include artificial intelligence in healthcare, affordable cancer therapies, healthcare-associated infections, and metabolic disorders.
To ensure seamless coordination, each participating AIIMS will nominate nodal officers and single points of contact for implementing collaborative activities.
Leadership Emphasises Quality and Impact of Research
Addressing the gathering, M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi, said the consortium reflects a collective commitment to high-quality, nationally relevant research. He noted that by bringing together the strengths of AIIMS institutions across India, the consortium aims to generate robust scientific evidence, promote innovation, and support informed decision-making in healthcare.
Framework to Accelerate Translation of Research into Practice
Meanwhile, Dean (Research) Dr. Nikhil Tandon highlighted the importance of the new framework in enabling large, multi-institutional studies needed to address complex health problems. He said that harmonising research protocols and leveraging diverse patient populations across AIIMS institutions will improve research quality, enhance reproducibility, and accelerate the translation of evidence into clinical practice and public health policy.
