Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday announced that the digital health records system, currently being piloted in Kuppam under the Sanjeevani project, will be expanded across Andhra Pradesh. Through this initiative, the state aims to create comprehensive health risk profiles for every citizen.
Expert Panel Reviews Technology-Driven Health Reforms
During a meeting with a 10-member expert group comprising national and international specialists, including representatives from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Naidu outlined the government’s plan to overhaul the public health sector by integrating advanced technologies. He emphasized that the state is prioritizing preventive healthcare through digital solutions and requested the panel to present Andhra Pradesh’s digital health initiatives at the Global AI Convention in Mumbai.
Focus on Preventive Care and Disease Burden Reduction
Highlighting the government’s vision, Naidu stated that digital health records for all citizens will be completed within a year. Moreover, by categorizing diseases and identifying risks early, the government intends to significantly reduce the overall disease burden through targeted preventive measures. Referring to the successful Mustabu programme implemented in tribal schools, he added that awareness and early intervention remain central to improving health outcomes.
Experts Highlight Nutrition, Pollution, and AI Integration
As reported by TOI, Former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan underscored the critical role of adequate nutrition in preventive healthcare. Meanwhile, former Union Health Secretary Arti Ahuja stressed the need to identify root causes of disease and raised concerns over the rising incidence of dialysis among young people, largely linked to pollution.
In addition, Yik-Ying Teo from the National University of Singapore noted that digital health records combined with AI will significantly strengthen healthcare delivery systems. Harvard public health professor Margaret Kruk praised Andhra Pradesh’s effective use of Hepatitis vaccination and its measurable positive impact. Similarly, Srikanth Nadhamuni highlighted that AI-enabled services are increasingly becoming integral to modern public health systems. AIG Hospitals Chairman D. Nageswara Reddy further emphasized the importance of health education and awareness, particularly among children.
Gates Foundation to Support Implementation and Monitoring
Concluding the discussions, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation India Country Director Archana Vyas said the foundation is actively working with Andhra Pradesh to strengthen health systems. She also announced that a dedicated health secretariat would soon be established for continuous monitoring.
Finally, Naidu proposed that the expert committee meet every six months to review progress and directed the Gates Foundation to prepare a detailed action plan based on the panel’s recommendations.
