The new cancer vaccines are not designed to prevent cancer in healthy individuals but to stop its recurrence in patients who have already undergone treatment, said Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, convener of the Research Cell, Kerala State IMA, and chairman of the scientific committee, IMA Cochin.
He spoke at the inaugural session of the second annual conference of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Society (GIOS) on Saturday. He clarified the purpose of these vaccines.
Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines Explained
Dr. Jayadevan stated that these therapeutic cancer vaccines prevent the disease from returning in cancer survivors.
He explained that these vaccines are a form of immunotherapy, known as individualised neoantigen therapy. This therapy trains the immune system to identify and destroy cancer cells.
Tackling Modern Challenges
Dr. Jayadevan also highlighted the challenge of “information overload and underthinking” in modern medicine, calling for a more thoughtful approach to adopting new technologies and therapies.
Conference Focuses on Colorectal Cancer
As reported by The Week, the three-day conference focuses on Colorectal Cancer (CRC), a disease with a rising global incidence.
>“Cancer treatment is evolving rapidly, and our goal should be to make it personalised for every patient,” said Dr. Arun R. Warrier, organising secretary of the event.
Experts and Workshops
The event has brought together over 200 oncologists, gastroenterologists, and other specialists to discuss advancements in prevention, screening, and treatment. The programme features workshops on surgical, radiation, and genomic aspects of CRC. It also includes a special session on non-operative management, led by leading national and international faculty.
