Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has proposed integrating three major government hospitals—Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB), Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI), and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital (RGSSH)—into a single “super medical hub.” The proposed model will function on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and aims to strengthen access to advanced healthcare services in the national capital.
Announcing the plan on Monday, the Chief Minister stated that the integration would expand bed capacity, streamline diagnostic and referral processes, and reduce patient waiting times. “GTB Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital are being integrated and developed into a super medical hub on the lines of AIIMS. This will increase bed availability, simplify the process of tests and referrals, and reduce waiting times so that every patient can receive timely, fast, and better treatment,” she said in a post on social media.
Vision for a Unified Healthcare Institution
Earlier on Sunday, CM Gupta outlined the broader vision for Delhi’s public healthcare system. According to her, the three institutions will be developed into an autonomous and empowered medical institute designed to offer comprehensive healthcare services under one umbrella.
By bringing these facilities together, the government aims to enable millions of patients from Delhi and surrounding regions to access modern and specialised treatment at a single location. In addition, the integration is expected to improve the overall quality of care and streamline hospital services.
She noted that the initiative would make high-quality healthcare more accessible to the public while strengthening the city’s healthcare infrastructure. The step, she added, represents a significant move toward building a strong and reliable healthcare system for Delhi.
Addressing Imbalance in Patient Load
As reported by NDTV, the proposed integration also seeks to address the uneven distribution of patients across government hospitals in the city.
For example, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital has a sanctioned capacity of around 650 beds. However, it currently operates only about 250 beds, leaving nearly 400 beds unused. In contrast, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital has an approved capacity of approximately 1,400 beds but is currently treating more than 1,500 patients due to high demand.
This imbalance has placed significant pressure on some facilities while leaving resources underutilised at others.
Improving Resource Utilisation and Patient Care
By consolidating GTB Hospital, DSCI, and RGSSH into a single integrated institute, the Delhi government aims to improve coordination among the facilities. The move is expected to enable optimal utilisation of infrastructure, medical equipment, and specialist expertise.
Moreover, the integrated model will help streamline referrals, reduce administrative delays, and ensure more efficient patient management across departments.
Towards a Modern Healthcare Hub
Ultimately, the proposed super medical hub is designed to reduce waiting times and enhance access to specialised treatment. The government expects the integrated institution to serve millions of residents from Delhi as well as neighbouring regions.
If implemented successfully, the initiative could transform the cluster of hospitals into a modern healthcare hub capable of delivering advanced, coordinated, and patient-centric medical services.
