Doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Seethammadhara, successfully treated a 65-year-old man who faced a high risk of a potentially fatal stroke due to critical blockages in major arteries supplying blood to the brain.
The patient had been experiencing recurrent episodes of giddiness for nearly a month. Subsequently, he developed sudden weakness on one side of his body, which prompted immediate medical attention. Initially, doctors evaluated him in Srikakulam. However, given the seriousness of his condition, they referred him to KIMS Seethammadhara for advanced care.
Investigations Reveal Critical Arterial Blockage
At KIMS Hospitals, the medical team conducted emergency investigations to determine the cause of his symptoms.
Dr. Raja Kumar Ponnana, Consultant Neurologist, along with Dr. Venkatesh Pothula, Head of Department, Neuro and Vascular Interventional Radiology, explained that the tests revealed severe obstruction in the vertebral and basilar arteries. These arteries are responsible for supplying blood to the brainstem, a vital part of the brain that controls essential body functions.
The doctors noted that such blockages can rapidly progress to a catastrophic stroke if not treated promptly.
Emergency Endovascular Procedure Performed
Given the high risk involved, the medical team immediately decided to perform an emergency endovascular intervention.
In a coordinated effort between the Neurology and Interventional Radiology departments, doctors accessed the affected artery through the blood vessels. They then cleared the blockage and placed a stent to restore normal blood flow to the brain. Importantly, the team performed the procedure without the need for open surgery, minimising recovery time and procedural risk.
Close Monitoring and Positive Recovery
Following the procedure, the patient was closely monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU). Doctors reported that he recovered well, with only mild residual neurological weakness.
Notably, the patient was able to give a “thumbs up” using the hand that had previously become weak, an encouraging sign that indicated neurological improvement and reassured the treating team.
Importance of Timely Stroke Care
As per the press release, the doctors emphasised that every minute is critical in stroke management. Early recognition of warning signs and rapid transfer to a well-equipped hospital can significantly improve survival and recovery outcomes.
Conversely, delays in treatment can greatly reduce the chances of regaining normal brain function and may lead to permanent disability.

The medical team highlighted that timely decision-making, seamless coordination between departments, and immediate specialist intervention played a decisive role in saving the patient’s life.
Through swift action and collaborative care, doctors not only prevented a potentially devastating stroke but also helped the patient recover with minimal neurological deficit.
