Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre has announced its first international expansion with a ₹1,200 crore investment in a 200-bed hospital and medical education facility in Mauritius. Construction is already underway, and the project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
“We have tied up with the Government of Mauritius for opening a 200-bed hospital and a facility for 400 medical students,” said Prashant Mehta, Permanent Trustee of Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMMT).
Integrated Healthcare and Education Model
As reported by The Hindu Business Line, the project will combine tertiary care services with a medical education facility, reflecting a dual-focus strategy. The government has allocated approximately 10 acres of land, enabling the trust to build both clinical and academic infrastructure simultaneously.
Strategic Focus on Africa Region
Moreover, the Mauritius facility is being positioned as a healthcare hub for the African region, where access to advanced care remains limited. Its proximity and strong Indian diaspora presence further strengthen its strategic importance.
Expansion Gains Momentum in GIFT City
Simultaneously, Lilavati Hospital has launched operations at its new facility in GIFT City, Gujarat marking its first expansion outside Mumbai in India. Backed by an investment of over ₹700 crore, the 375-bed multi-specialty hospital has begun with OPD services and free medical camps.
“The initial phase of Lilavati Hospital in GIFT City has commenced… For the first 30 days we are not charging anything,” Mehta said.
Phased Development and Advanced Care
The project will roll out in three phases, with 120 beds operational in Phase 1. Currently, OPD services are functional, while construction continues. Notably, the hospital plans to introduce robotic surgery across specialties, along with emergency, dialysis, and day-care services.
Future Vision: Medical Tourism and Innovation
Looking ahead, the hospital aims to become fully operational by March 2027. It is also exploring air ambulance services to support organ transplantation and international patients.
“This hospital in GIFT City will be a medical monument for India,” said Rajiv Mehta, highlighting its medical tourism potential.
Global Collaboration and Training
Finally, Lilavati Hospital has partnered with the Mayo Clinic for training and technology transfer. This collaboration will enhance clinical expertise and support global standards of care across its expanding network.
