Navatha’s Inspiring Comeback: From Career-Threatening Knee Injury to National Silver

Navatha, a passionate Sepaktakraw player from a young age, has made a stunning return to the national stage. After a serious knee injury nearly ended her sporting journey, she defied all odds to win a silver medal at the National Games—an achievement that speaks volumes about her grit and determination.

Dreams Halted: Injury at Asian Games Camp

In 2024, while training in Goa to represent India at the Asian Games, Navatha suffered a devastating blow. A severe knee injury abruptly ended her participation, casting doubt over her future in Sepaktakraw. The setback was emotionally and physically overwhelming, especially since she had worked tirelessly to reach that level.

Expert Intervention and Surgical Success

Desperate for expert help, Navatha turned to online research and found Dr. Hariprakash, Consultant Orthopedic Arthroscopy, Joint Replacement & Sports Surgeon at KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad. She wasted no time and immediately sought treatment.

As per a press release from KIMS Hospital, Dr. Hariprakash shared details of her condition:

“Navatha had sustained a complete tear of the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament)—a crucial knee ligament. Given the extent of the injury, surgical intervention was unavoidable. We waited two weeks for the swelling to reduce and then reconstructed her ACL using a graft from her own ligament.”

He further explained that using natural grafts results in faster healing and fewer complications compared to synthetic ones, which are reserved for more complex cases involving multiple ligament injuries.

 Rehabilitation and Road to Recovery

After the surgery, physiotherapy played a pivotal role in her recovery. However, Navatha faced challenges in maintaining a consistent rehab schedule. She had just started a new job with the Income Tax Department in Mumbai and couldn’t take extended leave. As a result, her recovery stretched over 8–10 months.

Despite the slow pace, she began training again by late 2024. Gradually regaining strength and confidence, she made her way back onto the court.

 Overcoming Doubts and Returning Stronger

Recalling her journey, Navatha shared,

“I was thrilled to be at the Asian Games camp, but the injury was a nightmare. After the diagnosis, I feared I might never play again—especially because Sepaktakraw heavily relies on knee movement. If the ball touches the hand, it’s a foul, so leg agility is everything.”

She added,

“Thanks to the successful surgery and dedicated rehab, I was able to make a full comeback. Winning a national silver medal after everything I went through feels surreal.”

A Message for Fellow Athletes

Dr. Hariprakash emphasized the importance of early medical consultation after a sports injury.

“Timely diagnosis helps determine whether just the ACL is affected or if there’s additional damage to the cartilage or meniscus. Surgery should always follow once the swelling subsides, and rehabilitation is crucial for full recovery.”

 Conclusion: A Victory Beyond Medals

Navatha’s story is more than just a medal win—it’s a powerful example of resilience, the importance of expert care, and the strength of the human spirit. Her journey stands as inspiration to every athlete who faces setbacks on the path to success.
