Odisha: MKCG MCH Begins Advanced Plasma and Red Cell Exchange Therapies

MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MCH), Berhampur, has launched therapeutic plasma exchange and red cell exchange procedures, marking a significant upgrade in its critical care services. The hospital successfully performed these specialised therapies for patients with severe and life-threatening conditions, thereby expanding access to advanced treatment in southern Odisha.

Treatment for Critical and Rare Disorders

Doctors used therapeutic plasma exchange to treat a patient suffering from atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare disorder that severely affects kidney function. In another case, they carried out a red cell exchange in a sickle cell disease patient, significantly improving clinical outcomes and reducing disease-related complications.

Improved Access for Patients in Southern Odisha

Earlier, patients had to travel to Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, or outside the state for such procedures. Now, MKCG provides these services locally, easing financial and logistical burdens on families. As per The New Indian Express, this development strengthens regional healthcare delivery by making advanced therapies available at no cost within the institution.

Boost to Public Healthcare Infrastructure

The hospital administration stated that the new facilities will benefit a large number of economically weaker patients who require specialised blood-related treatments. Furthermore, the multidisciplinary team has ensured smooth execution of these complex procedures, reflecting the institution’s growing capabilities in transfusion medicine.
