Pfizer India has launched Rimegepant, a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, to treat acute migraine in adults who have not responded adequately to triptan therapy. As per the Economic Times, this is a major step for migraine care in the country.
How the Drug Works
Rimegepant directly targets the pathophysiology of migraine by blocking CGRP receptors, which play a central role in transmitting headache pain. Consequently, patients experience rapid and sustained relief that can last up to 48 hours after a single dose. Unlike many commonly used migraine medicines, this treatment does not carry a risk of medication-overuse headaches.
Convenient and Patient-Friendly Format
To enhance usability, Pfizer is offering Rimegepant in a 75 mg orally disintegrating tablet (ODT). This tablet dissolves on the tongue, which means patients can take it even without water — a particularly useful feature during sudden migraine onset.
Benefits Beyond Pain Relief
Because the drug works quickly and lasts long, it helps patients restore their daily functioning sooner. Meenakshi Nevatia, MD of Pfizer India, stated, “We believe this treatment will help people with migraine manage pain more effectively and reclaim productive days sooner than with currently available options.”
Significance for India
This launch addresses a critical gap in migraine management. Given the high burden of migraine in India, providing a fast-acting, durable, and low-overuse-risk therapy could transform care for many patients. In addition, making this drug available in a water-free format could improve accessibility and adherence.
