As temperatures continue to rise across Mumbai, hospitals are witnessing a noticeable increase in cases of heatstroke, dehydration, and heat-related neurological complications. The ongoing heatwave is not only affecting physical health but also posing serious risks to brain function, prompting medical experts to emphasise the importance of protecting neurological well-being during the summer months.
Humidity Intensifies Heatstroke Risk
Heatstroke remains a significant concern in Mumbai during summer due to the combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity levels. While the body normally cools itself through sweating, excessive humidity prevents sweat from evaporating effectively. Consequently, the body struggles to regulate its temperature, which significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Hospitals Report Growing Number of Cases
Healthcare professionals at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road have reported a steady rise in patients presenting with symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, headaches, fatigue, and fainting spells. These symptoms are often associated with heat exhaustion. However, if left untreated, they can quickly escalate into life-threatening heatstroke.
Extreme Heat Can Affect Brain Function
Highlighting the neurological impact of extreme heat, Dr. Pavan Pai, Consultant Interventional Neurologist and Stroke Specialist at Wockhardt Hospitals, explained that high temperatures can significantly disrupt brain health.
“Extreme heat can severely impact brain health. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance interfere with normal brain function, leading to poor concentration, mood disturbances, and, in severe cases, stroke-like symptoms,” he said.
Furthermore, he noted that the brain is highly sensitive to fluctuations in body temperature.
“When the body overheats, it can impair blood flow to the brain and disrupt neural activity. Therefore, timely hydration and cooling measures become crucial,” Dr. Pai added.
Certain Groups Face Higher Vulnerability
Doctors at Wockhardt Hospitals caution that several groups face a higher risk of heat-related complications. These include children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing neurological or cardiovascular conditions.
In addition, people who spend extended periods outdoors are particularly vulnerable. Construction workers, for instance, often work long hours under direct sunlight. Similarly, traffic police officers remain exposed to the heat while managing road traffic. Delivery personnel, who travel long distances throughout the day, also face increased exposure to extreme temperatures.
Dehydration Can Affect Cognitive Performance
As per the press release, Dr. Pai emphasised that even mild dehydration can negatively impact memory, alertness, and decision-making ability. If heat-related stress becomes severe, it may lead to brain swelling, seizures, or permanent neurological damage.
Preventive Measures to Stay Safe
To reduce the risk of heat-related complications, doctors recommend adopting simple preventive measures. These include drinking adequate amounts of water, consuming electrolyte-rich fluids, avoiding outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and ensuring sufficient rest.
Moreover, wearing light clothing and seeking shade whenever possible can further help the body maintain a stable temperature.
Awareness and Early Action Are Key
As Mumbai continues to experience rising temperatures, healthcare experts stress that protecting brain health is just as important as safeguarding overall physical health. By recognising early warning signs and taking preventive measures, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related complications and stay safe during the summer season.
