In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur successfully reattached both severed hands of a 28-year-old man after a brutal sword attack in Barmer. The intricate 10-hour surgery is being hailed as a major triumph in trauma and reconstructive surgery.
Violent Attack Leaves Victim Critically Injured
Emergency Stabilisation and Transfer to AIIMS
People first rushed the victim to Barmer District Hospital, where doctors administered two units of blood to stabilise him. On September 18, they transferred him to the trauma center at AIIMS Jodhpur. At the time of admission, doctors found his right hand completely amputated, attached only by a thin layer of skin. His left hand had multiple fractures and severe nerve injuries.
Multidisciplinary Team Undertakes Marathon Surgery
A team of trauma surgeons, plastic surgeons, and orthopaedic specialists immediately stabilised the patient before initiating the complex reattachment procedure. Dr. Prakash Chandra Kala, Head of Plastic Surgery, explained that the surgery was “technically challenging,” requiring the use of a microscope to reconnect delicate blood vessels. He noted, “The successful reconstruction reflects the expertise and dedication of the team. The outcome has been very encouraging.”
Promising Recovery and Rehabilitation Ahead
Following the surgery, the patient has shown encouraging signs of recovery. After more than 10 days of close observation, doctors reported stable circulation in his right hand and satisfactory healing progress. Dr. Kala expressed optimism: “With continued physiotherapy and bone healing, the patient is expected to regain normal hand function within three to four weeks.”
Community Shock and Legal Action
As reported by TOI, the assault, which stemmed from a payment dispute at a liquor shop, has deeply shocked the local community. Police have arrested the alleged attacker, BSF soldier and former NSG commando Champalal. He now faces multiple charges related to the incident.
