Ankura Hospital for Women & Children observed World PICU Awareness Day 2026 by organising a special event themed “Caring for Caregivers.” Through the initiative, the hospital celebrated the resilience of children who overcame critical illnesses and recognised the unwavering support provided by families and healthcare professionals throughout their recovery journeys.

As part of the event, the hospital felicitated children who had successfully recovered and been discharged from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Additionally, the hospital conducted engaging activities for PICU graduate children and their families and distributed gift hampers to young survivors, making the occasion both memorable and comforting for attendees.

Raising Awareness About Pediatric Critical Care

A Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a highly specialised hospital unit that provides advanced treatment and continuous monitoring for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses or severe injuries.

Children admitted to PICUs often include those battling severe infections, respiratory distress, trauma, neurological emergencies, post-surgical complications, organ failure, and other critical conditions requiring round-the-clock medical expertise and advanced life-support systems.

Through World PICU Awareness Week, healthcare institutions aim to spread awareness about pediatric critical care while also acknowledging the emotional and physical strength demonstrated by children, caregivers, and medical teams during challenging medical situations.

Furthermore, the initiative highlighted the importance of early intervention, specialised intensive care services, and family-centred support systems in improving survival and recovery outcomes among critically ill children.

Doctors Highlight Emotional Strength of Families and Healthcare Teams

Speaking during the event, Dr Milind Jambagi emphasised the emotional challenges faced by both patients and caregivers during critical care treatment.

“Every child who enters the PICU fights an incredibly difficult battle, and behind every child stands a family carrying fear, hope, and emotional exhaustion,” he said.

He further noted that World PICU Awareness Day goes beyond recognising medical treatment alone.

“It is also about appreciating the silent strength of parents, caregivers, nurses, and doctors who stand together throughout the child’s recovery journey,” he added. “Through this event, we want families to know that they are not alone and that every small recovery is a moment worth celebrating.”

As per the press release, Dr Jambagi, who also serves as Chairperson of the WFPICCS Education Committee in Geneva, stated that seeing children recover and return home healthy remains the greatest motivation for healthcare professionals working in pediatric intensive care.

Event Focuses on Emotional Support and Recovery

Along with creating awareness about pediatric critical care, the event also aimed to provide emotional encouragement to families who had experienced difficult medical journeys with their children.

By celebrating recovery milestones and honouring caregivers, Ankura Hospital for Women & Children reinforced the importance of compassionate, family-focused care in pediatric intensive care settings.
