A Milestone in Minimally Invasive Fibroid Care
Marking a significant medical milestone and a first in South Tamil Nadu, Kauvery Hospital, Tirunelveli, successfully treated a 51-year-old woman suffering from severe symptomatic uterine fibroids using a minimally invasive procedure called Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE).
The advanced treatment allowed doctors to preserve the patient’s uterus while ensuring a quick recovery. The patient was discharged within 24 hours of the procedure. Moreover, during her seven-day follow-up, imaging confirmed complete absence of blood flow to the fibroid. She reported no pain and no per vaginal bleeding.
Long History of Symptomatic Fibroids
As per the press release, the patient had been experiencing symptomatic fibroids since 2019. As a result, she suffered from heavy menstrual bleeding and chronic blood loss anemia. Over the years, doctors managed her condition with multiple blood transfusions and intravenous iron sucrose injections to stabilize her hemoglobin levels.
However, although these treatments temporarily improved her anemia, they did not address the underlying cause—the fibroid’s blood supply. Since the symptoms continued and the patient wanted to avoid a hysterectomy, the medical team opted for a uterus-preserving treatment approach.
Minimally Invasive Procedure Addresses the Root Cause
Consequently, the multidisciplinary team at Kauvery Hospital performed Bilateral UAE, an advanced interventional radiology procedure that blocks the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to gradually shrink.
During the procedure, doctors inserted a small catheter through an artery and navigated it to the uterine arteries that supplied the fibroid. They then injected tiny embolic particles to selectively block blood flow. By targeting the root cause, the treatment effectively controlled bleeding and relieved symptoms without the need for major surgery.
Expert Multidisciplinary Team Leads the Treatment
The procedure was led by Dr. Amalan Ignatius, Consultant Interventional Radiologist, along with Dr. Faizal Basheer, Consultant General Medicine & Diabetologist; Dr. Lakshmanan, Senior Consultant Anesthesiologist; and Dr. Yogesh Kumar, Consultant Anesthesiologist.
Dr. Ignatius highlighted the significance of the procedure, stating that the team successfully treated the fibroid while preserving the uterus and avoiding major surgery. He further noted that this is the first time UAE has been performed at Kauvery Hospital, Tirunelveli, marking a major advancement in fibroid care in South Tamil Nadu.
“By cutting off the fibroid’s blood supply, we addressed the root cause, stopped the bleeding, and prevented the recurrence of severe anemia. The patient also recovered quickly and required only a short hospital stay,” he added.
Advancing Women’s Health with Minimally Invasive Care
Overall, this successful procedure highlights the growing role of minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques in managing gynecological conditions. Furthermore, it expands treatment options for women seeking uterus-preserving alternatives to traditional surgery, thereby improving both clinical outcomes and recovery time.
