On World Diabetes Day, Metropolis Healthcare Limited—led by Ameera Shah and recognised as India’s second-largest and most trusted pathology laboratory chain—released new insights from its large-scale lipid analysis. The findings shed light on how early metabolic imbalance may be silently accelerating India’s growing diabetes crisis.
Early Detection: Stay One Step Ahead of Diabetes
Metropolis urged individuals to “manage your sugar the sure way” by focusing on early metabolic indicators that precede abnormal blood sugar levels.
Nationwide Lipid Study Reveals Widespread Metabolic Dysfunction
Drawing from a lipid profile study of more than 3.9 lakh individuals, originally released around World Heart Day, the new interpretation highlights a strong link between lipid abnormalities, metabolic dysfunction, and diabetes risk. The analysis revealed that one in three Indians shows lipid imbalances — a clear warning sign of early insulin resistance and future Type 2 Diabetes.
As per the press release, the data further shows that cholesterol and triglyceride disturbances appear years before blood sugar begins to rise, emphasizing the importance of evaluating metabolic health beyond glucose monitoring.
Key Indicators of Metabolic Stress
Younger Adults Show Rising Metabolic Risks
Alarmingly, individuals in their 30s and 40s increasingly exhibit signs of metabolic stress. Many show low HDL or high triglycerides despite having no visible symptoms. This trend signals a silent yet significant metabolic shift in India’s urban and semi-urban population.
Key National Insights: Gender and Age Trends
Men appear to face higher metabolic risks, with 37.5% showing high triglycerides and 46.5% showing low HDL, compared to 28.9% and 24.3% among women. These abnormalities appear across all age groups, including younger adults, showing that metabolic imbalance now extends far beyond obesity. Lifestyle factors—such as chronic stress, inadequate sleep, and processed food consumption—likely drive this trend.
Need for Regular Screening and Timely Intervention
These findings strengthen the call for regular lipid and glucose screenings for all adults over 30. Early diagnosis enables lifestyle modification and timely medical support. The Metropolis TruHealth Packages provide comprehensive evaluations that help detect and manage metabolic and cardiovascular risks effectively.
Understanding Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is diagnosed when an individual exhibits three or more of the following: abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and high fasting plasma glucose. Together, these factors significantly increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver. Metropolis’ data aligns with global findings, where MetS prevalence ranges from 12.5% to 31.4%, reinforcing the urgent need for action as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) escalate nationwide.
Leadership Insights on the Findings
Commenting on the results, Mr. Surendran Chemmenkotil, Managing Director, Metropolis Healthcare Limited, said, “At Metropolis, our mission goes beyond diagnostics — we help people understand their health before disease develops. The data clearly shows silent metabolic risks in younger adults. Awareness and early testing can change this health trajectory. By turning insights into public education, we aim to fuel a preventive health movement across India.”
Adding to this, Dr. Kirti Chadha, Chief Scientific and Innovation Officer, stated, “Metabolic imbalance is the body’s earliest warning signal, often sounding years before diabetes is diagnosed. Low HDL and high triglycerides are among the first signs of insulin resistance. Regular lipid and glucose tests help detect these patterns early, enabling meaningful lifestyle changes and preventing disease progression. With rising use of weight-loss and metabolic therapies, continuous lab monitoring has become critical for safe and effective health outcomes.”
