Mumbai, November 7, 2026: National Cancer Awareness Day, observed every year on November 7, highlights the importance of cancer prevention, early detection and timely treatment. On this occasion, Dr. Antony Raj James, Head and Neck Oncosurgeon at Apex Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, emphasises the need to raise awareness about head and neck cancers, identify early warning signs and encourage people to seek medical attention without delay.
India Reports Over 1.4 Million New Cancer Cases
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates recorded approximately 14.13 lakh new cancer cases and 9.16 lakh cancer-related deaths in India. Oral cancer remains a major concern, with 1,43,759 new cases reported in 2022, making it the second most common cancer in the country across both genders.
Recognising Early Warning Signs Can Save Lives
Highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, Dr. Antony Raj James said that many patients approach specialists only after the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. He emphasised that timely detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes, survival and quality of life.
He urged people not to ignore persistent symptoms such as mouth ulcers that do not heal, unexplained lumps in the neck, difficulty swallowing, persistent hoarseness, voice changes or unusual growths in the oral cavity. Such symptoms require proper medical evaluation rather than self-medication or delayed consultation.
Tobacco and Alcohol Increase Cancer Risk
Furthermore, Dr. James highlighted tobacco consumption in any form, including cigarettes, gutka, pan masala and chewing tobacco, as a major risk factor for oral and head and neck cancers. Excessive alcohol consumption can also increase the risk.
He stressed that avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and undergoing timely medical examinations can help reduce cancer risks and support early diagnosis.
Specialised Expertise in Head and Neck Cancer Care
With specialised training from Tata Memorial Hospital and over four years of experience in head and neck oncology and surgical cancer care, Dr. Antony Raj James specialises in oral cavity cancer surgery, thyroid cancer surgery, salivary gland and parotid tumours, neck dissection, skull base tumour surgery and head and neck cancer reconstruction.
Emphasising the need for continuous public awareness, Dr. James said that cancer awareness should extend beyond a single day. He noted that recognising warning signs, overcoming fear and seeking timely expert consultation can make a significant difference in saving lives.
